Update for 5/23/08

Here is what we’ve been up to.

Planted – potatoes, also made carrot seed tapes but need to actually get them in the dirt. Husband built three more potato “bins” from chicken wire. I also planted 3 five gallon buckets as an experiment. I want to cover the driveway in kiddie pools and grow pumpkins and watermelons out there but my husband thinks this might be too um – rednecky? trailer trashy? or something like that. Maybe I can figure out a way to dress them up or maybe just do wood beds or something. Eventually I want to the driveway to go completely, but I’m not sure how or when I will tackle that, and I guess I need to find out if we need a permit or something.

Harvested – nada. Really need to pull the green onions.

Managed / Prepped something – This is our big category. Picked up a first aid kit at bigbox store. Stored down comforters for winter. Doubled the food storage area in the garagement and separated the tools from the food area. This way you aren’t tripping over gallons of water to get to the circular saw and you don’t have strange bottles of glue intermingling with the stored oil and honey. Also inventoried the freezer. There is still MUCH to be done down there, but I feel like we are making progress.

Food Storage – Bucketification of beans and grains continues

Waste – just the usual composting. Sis-in-law did trash pick some planters for me.

New skills – relighting pilot light on water heater. I’m going to post separately about that one. And making the carrot tapes.

Local foods – still getting delivery of localish milk and some localish produce. Should go to farmers market, but haven’t made it there yet. There is one tomorrow, but I don’t know how busy I’ll be.

Not as bad of a week as I thought it would be, but I still feel like I’m ‘behind’ on everything.

New skills – the seed tapes were new, worked well to use a little eyedropper for the cornstarch
